Paul Tate launched the company in
August 1996 with a mission to develop online media properties for a broad audience. Soon
after the founding, Tate began a partnership with writer/performer Tony Daniel to develop the company’s
flagship project, a film review web site called Dr. Daniel’s Movie Emergency. The site’s comedic framework
revolves around an “urgent-care clinic” for the treatment of addicted film fanatics, supported by a wealth of
interesting features, reviews, essays, games, and contests. The site debuted formally on
December 15, 1996, and numerous
awards soon followed, including the Cool Site of the Day, widely
considered the top daily award on the Web. In addition to appearing on scores of online ‘cool’ lists,
the site has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Windows
Magazine, PC World, Internet Underground, and Web Magazine.
March 1997 saw the launch of another Stairwell property, Stare Down Sally, an interactive web game based
on the concept of a childhood staring contest. Visitors to the site encounter Sally, a green-eyed enchantress
who challenges them to see who can stare the longest. The quirky site captured the imagination of over 100,000 visitors in its first year, while garnering the prestigious Cool Site of the Day award, a Yahoo Strange Site recognition, a USA Hot Site notice,
and praise from many site reviewers.
The company’s next project emerged from an impromptu ‘summer road trip’ to see the Field of Dreams
in Dyersville, Iowa. The Field, created from a corn farm for the 1989 Universal motion picture, Field of
Dreams, has been preserved as it was depicted in the film, becoming something of a tourist mecca for film
and baseball fans. Conversations with the Field’s owners, Don and Becky Lansing, led to an agreement for
Stairwell Studios to design an interactive web presence for the attraction. The site went live in November
1997 and consistently receives rave reviews from visitors.
Another movie-related project followed, as Stairwell Studios became the official online partner for GLD
Media’s motion picture release Purchase of God. The promotional web site
provides web surfers with behind-the-scenes data, including video clips, cast and crew
bios, a movie stills gallery, the complete screenplay and order information.
These successful projects paved the way for Stairwell’s entry into business site development, the first of which
was a site for Hammock Audio Services, a digital audio production studio in west Georgia. Further illustrating this focus on online audio are Sound Mind Theater, a venture reviving the lost art of radio drama using digital technologies, as well as the official site for Nashville-based guitarist Roger Hudson.
We continue to focus on our core competencies of using emerging technologies to produce creative and dynamic media products. We're proud to include a number of business and institutional clients in the fold, including AirSept Inc., The Envirosense Consortium, LaGrange College, Interface, Inc., Initial Publications, Lanier Health Services, Modern Machining Solutions, Russell Medical Center, Troup County Archives and Camp Glisson.
Stairwell Studios also provides contract
development for a number of other web development firms.
